How Can I Help?
Literacy councils serve adults up to a ninth-grade reading level. Trained volunteer tutors provide free one-on-one tutoring at the student's own pace and convenience or in small group English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The curriculum is designed to meet the student's needs and goals.
How can I be a volunteer tutor?
Give us a call at the Literacy Council of Benton County (LCBC) office (479) 273-3486, come in for a tour, and we’ll give you an application or sign up from our website. All volunteer tutors, regardless of their educational background – or career – take a tutor training workshop offered by LCBC, and are then matched with a student. Tutor - student pairs are asked to meet twice a week for 1-1/2 hours at the LCBC office, or the Bentonville, Bella Vista, or Rogers public libraries. Meeting times are matched to tutor and student preferences, and are quite flexible to accommodate vacations and other needed time-off. LCBC provides all learning materials and ongoing support to tutors as they work with students for free.
FYI—you do not need to be a school teacher or a college graduate, or speak a second language to become a volunteer tutor.
I want to help the Literacy Council, but tutoring is not for me.
That's okay. The Literacy Council of Benton County has other volunteer opportunities:
Invest in literacy.
