Overview
We are a nonprofit 501(c) corporation created in 1972 to provide free literacy training to adults age 18 and over. We train volunteer Tutors and provide them with teaching materials and support resources.
We offer programs in Adult Basic English and English as a Second Language. Our students set personal goals and their lesson plans are designed to help them achieve proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English at a 9th grade level.
Examples of some personal goals achieved by our students include finding a job, gaining a promotion, driver’s license or citizenship, improving their ability to help their children with homework, understanding directions from doctors, talking with their children’s teachers and interacting with the community as a whole.
Our Tutor training and Student teaching methods are based on the Laubach Method that formed the basis of the national movement of adult literacy education that spread throughout the United States in the 1960s. We are a member of the Adult Learning Alliance of Arkansas, a partnership of community based literacy councils throughout the state, and belong to ProLiteracy, the national adult literacy advocacy network.
