Who can be in the program?
Adults 18 years of age and older can enroll. You must have a phone or regular access to a telephone so you and your tutor can stay in touch.
How much does it cost to be in the program?
The program is free to all students. All materials provided to students are free.
How long will it take to get a tutor?
There is currently a waiting list for students.
Do I have to take a written test to be in the program?
Written tests are not required for all students, but they help us find the right tutor and books to help you learn. Most students do take a simple test or assessment. All students meet with an assessment specialist before they begin tutoring when available.
How long are the tests?
This depends on each student and what test they are taking. There are different English tests to take:
The Basic English Skills Test (BEST) and the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). The tests can last anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours.
How often do I take tests?
After 60 hours of instruction with your tutor.
When is the council open?
The Bentonville office is open Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 4 pm, Friday 9 am to 12 pm.
When are my sessions with a tutor?
You decide the days and times you can meet with your tutor and the council will match you with a tutor who has the same availability as you. Some tutors will only tutor in the morning, some in the evening. You will meet with a tutor that is available when you are. Tutors and students can meet until eight in the evening, no later.
Are the tutors paid?
No, they are volunteers. The tutors are certified through LCBC and Internet training classes to teach adults English.
Are there other students in my session?
The sessions are one on one. You can request to be in a small group of four students or less.
Where are my sessions?
Sessions will be held at the LCBC office, the Bentonville Public Library, the Rogers Public Library or the Bella Vista Public library.
